During a recent conference call, INFINITI CEO Roland Krueger dropped some hints to the assembled press as to what San Diego drivers (and the rest of the world) can expect from the company at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. In the process, he also hinted at a major part of the company’s longer-term plans for new vehicle classes, some of which may be seen at Kearny Mesa INFINITI in the years ahead.
The first bit of news was a repeat, with a twist. Twice this year — once in Beijing and once in Paris — we saw the INFINITI QX Sport Inspiration concept. Krueger stated that another iteration will appear in Detroit, but he was coy about whether this would be a further refinement of the concept, something closer to a production model and replacement for the INFINITI QX50, or something else altogether. He did allow that the company would “focus on the growth markets and the growth segments,” going on to add, “The main topic is definitely the growth in SUVs.”
The other newsworthy item was Krueger’s assertion that the INFINITI brand was again eyeing development of new hybrid and EV concepts. The EV program had been put on indefinite hold back in 2013 in order to shift focus to traditional drivetrains. However, the same market forces that have seen luxury car companies banking on crossovers have now started to take hold with EVs, making them more of a priority.
